In the late ‘90s, the big 3 German automakers were expanding their shares in the luxury car market even further into a segment called the “ultra-luxury” market, which were cars that were so expensive & luxurious, that only the richest of people could afford them. Due to Volkswagen's purchase of Bentley, along with the purchase of Rolls-Royce by BMW, Mercedes needed a large luxury sedan to combat the upcoming cars from rivals. So they debuted the Maybach 57 & 62 in 2004.
